Beynac Castle

When we first came to the Dordogne area four years ago, it was this castle that drew us here.  Being a castle fan, I had to check it out when I first read about it.  We only stayed one day to see Beynac and Castlenaud just down the river, but were so impressed by the area we’ve been back every year since for longer visits.  As it’s one of our favorite castles, we decided it was time for a return visit to refresh our memories.  We didn’t think much would have changed, but were pleasantly surprised to find many improvements from ongoing restoration which has allowed opening of new rooms and terraces along with improved presentation.  Considered one of the most ‘authentic’ castles in southern France it retains its medieval character and makes an imposing sight sitting on a sheer cliff above a bend in the Dordogne.  It also once belonged to King Richard I of England, an early Baron of Beynac, although he never really lived in it as he assigned it to one of his lieutenants to guard his properties in southern France.  Its commanding views of the river and countryside made it ideal to control river traffic and the area.  As you can see, the clouds had cleared and we had a beautiful day for our visit with the temperature hitting 33oC in October.

Unfortunately, it’s back to cool & overcast, but can’t complain. Just a couple weeks left.

Another cool castle – do you think you inherited your love of castles from your ancestors? They are so intriguing and it is fun imagining how life was lived in them. Great weather you are having.
    cheers
