Today is market day in Sarlat, so Robert went to check it out and see if I should venture DOWN the hill. The down part is relatively easy but the UP is not!! So while he is gone I decided to add some little tidbits that I have found interesting??
I do love it here and love the house so… The land around the house is full of walnut trees, walnuts and walnut furniture are famous in this area. So what property would be complete without a FEW walnut trees?? What critters love nuts, squirrels, of course, and we have a lot of them living here.
I have included the stairway to heaven picture (for Katya), which is in the kitchen courtyard. We can see it from the table and window above the sink. As we all know squirrels can climb trees but these squirrels use this ladder to cross the roof of our bedroom to access the trees. They fill their mouths with nuts and then cross and come back down through the courtyard. Such characters!!
Today they have been very vocal—they sound like the sea gulls in “Finding Nemo” saying, “MINE, MINE, MINE”! Also, this AM they were back and forth across the bedroom roof and banging nuts on it!! Interesting alarm clock!! I have included a picture of a walnut tree full of nuts and one that I picked up–that they cannot have. Am I mean??
Well, another feature of the kitchen courtyard is the access to the laundry. I have included two pictures of it, one from long ago and the other more recent. I thought you would enjoy the old washboard sink—it still works.
We enjoy driving around this area so full of beautiful little villages and all so interesting. As you know Joan of Arc is a real heroine in France and statues of her are everywhere. I particularly loved this one.
We have gone for a boat ride on the Dordogne River during a cloud burst but enjoyed learning the importance and history of the river. We were just a “little” wet when we got off—but then, so was everyone else.
St. Cyprien village was preparing for a festival—so enchanting driving through the hanging flowers(plastic)! Hope they recycle them??
The Périgord region, that we are in is also home to the city of Bergerac, so I had to find Roxane and Cyrano?? I found them!!
Well, enough for now—this turned out being much longer than anticipated!!

Too funny that it’s the squirrels that cause you to think about me and how much I would appreciate your story of the squirrels, the ladder, the walnuts, and the rooftop. As you can imagine, I am rolling on the floor laughing like we used to do over the silliest simplest things. Katya
My sides ache just thinking about our laughing sessions!!
