US Stopover

Better late than never!  Our trip this year started with a three week stopover in the U.S. to visit friends and family.  Anne will provide more detail in her post.  Suffice to say that most of the time was spent visiting and catching up which entailed lots of reminiscing, eating and sitting.  We did have a chance to do a little sightseeing to some favorite spots.  For me, that meant a visit to Bishop’s castle.  Somewhat of a prelude to Europe, this is one of those bizarre places you find by chance.  Jim Bishop has been building his castle since 1960 single handedly.  He has no plans and just follows his imagination.  As another visitor once said when I was there:  “He’s a crackpot, but he said he’d do it and he has.”  It’s not the great castles of Europe, but a unique piece of Americana in the foothills of the Rockies.

Another favorite spot in the Rockies is Cripple Creek.  An old gold mining boom town, it now survives on legalized gambling.  A feature of the town are the wild donkeys’, descendants of those left when the mines dried up.  They have the run of the town and are quite happy to have their noses scratched!

Finally, after a quick visit to Minnesota to visit family, we stayed overnight in Grand Island, Nebraska on the way back to Colorado.  By chance, a local hotrod club was having an evening get together and the cars on display were exceptional.

Next, it’s on to Europe, but that’s for the next post.  Till then!
