Anne’s View 2018-9

I am going to skip Barcelona. It ranks right up there with my favorite city of Prague. So no more needs to be said, Robert did that!!

Dali’s full name is: Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, 1st Marquis of Dalí de Púbol, known professionally as Salvador Dalí, was a prominent Spanish surrealist born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. The house he was born in is still there along with the church that he was baptized, confirmed and married in. He was born May 11, 1904 and died Jan 23, 1989 (age 84) from heart problems. His wife, Gala,  Elena Ivanovna Diakonovala was born in Russia. The following statement from Dali says it all!!  “I love Gala more than my mother, more than my father, more than Picasso, and even more than money. Gala is my muse, my genius and my life. I am nothing without Gala.” Salvador Dali  They were together over 50 years, married 48 of them.

Surrealists are not my favorite type of artist but I happen to love Dali, Picasso, and Miro. They were all Spanish and lived about the same time. They all knew each other. Dali and Miro were both from Catalonia??!!

When we left Barcelona we drove to Pubol which is about 1.5 hours north toward the French border. Pubol is important in the Dali saga because that is where he and Gala, his wife of 48 years had a castle. It is a medieval castle that was in bad shape,  Dali bought and renovated it for her. He gave it to her as a gift to use as a retreat and a resting place (she is buried there). He was not allowed to visit her at the castle unless he had a written invitation from her!!! Such a deal, but then that could work both ways?? The castle is amazing with lots of Dali in it since he was in charge of the restoration, art and design. My favorite parts were her bathroom and tub, the living room coffee table which was a skylight from the room below in which a horse is standing—stuffed of course—like Trigger, and a herd of elephants in the garden!! Oh just forget I said that—I loved it all. This is day one with Dali!!
